Installation Requirements
Hardware
The machine on which CaptureIT is installed should have at least an 400Mghz processor to run capture. The amount of RAM required will depend upon the size of you network, but a good rule-of-thumb would be at least 128Mb for a small office network. If you have a large network you will need to use larger amounts of RAM especially when using the Excel reporting facilities.
Software
CaptureIT requires the following software to be installed
- Microsoft Windows 2000 or later operating system.
- Internet Explorer version 5.0 or later.
- Microsoft Excel 2000 or later (if Excel reporting is installed).
Server Requirements
The Primary Domain Controller must be running one of the following Operating Systems:-
Windows 2000 Server:
- Must have Service Pack 4 installed to be able to connect to Windows XP and later operation systems.
- Must be running Active Directory.
Windows 2003 Server:
- Must be running Active Directory.
Client Requirements
CaptureIT can connect to and audit all client machines running current Microsoft operating systems from Window 95 and later. Earlier 16-bit operating systems are not supported.
WinXP
- Must be running NTFS on their installation disk (or partition)
- Service Pack 2 requires that the firewall be correctly configured. See below for details.
Win9X/WinME
- Cients must be running user-level security.
- The user list must be retieved from the domain controller for the client machine.
- File and Printer sharing must be enabled
non-9X
- clients must be correctly configured as network computers.
- The Domain Admins group must be a member of the Administrators group.
- DCOM must have been correctly setup on the machine.
There are special requirements for Win9X/WinMe client machines
Windows 9X (95,98,98SE)
- Requires the CaptureClientSetup.exe to be run to set up the machine (this can be easily configured on networks running Active Directory by using the ScriptEdit utility, provided as an optional installation feature.
- Requires that you are using User-level file sharing security
Windows Millenium Edition
- Requires the CaptureClientSetup.exe to be run to set up the machine (this can be easily configured using the ScriptEdit utility, provided as an optional installation feature.
- Requires that you are using User-level file sharing security
These configurations can be set remotely via login files, and these are easily configured using the ScriptEdit utility. Please see the setup page for details
Windows XP Service Pack 2 Requirements
Microsoft has finally decided to do something about its endless security problems and released Service Pack 2 for windows. By default the new windows firewall is enabled and this blocks all access to WMI. In order to run CaptureIT: If you are running on a pure XP service pack 2 environment you must:
- instruct the firewall to allow traffic to and from the WMI service or just disable it
- enable file and printer sharing
If you are running in a mixed environment (and this includes Win XP Service Pack 1) you must:
- disable the firewall
- enable file and printer sharing
These settings are easily configured using Group Policy in Active Directory. For further information on how to do these actions please see the following resources
