Backup and Disaster Recovery

Back up and Disaster Recovery, though understood as being the same are not.

Back up is the process of backing up the system state of your servers and PCs and backing up the data. However, just as important as the back up, the purpose is to restore the system state and data so you can be operational in a short period of time.

Disaster Recovery takes the whole process a step further, whereby you imagine a sitaution where you have to move site. This means you have to plan for the such things as:

  • Accessing the system state and data backup media to be able to restore them.
  • You must have the equipment to be able to access the media and restore.
  • You must have the computers to restore too.
  • You must have a location and the key people to operate.
  • and a lot more...

Clearly what can be done depends on the resources you have available, but the key element is to ensure you are aware of what needs to be done and have a plan in place.

Isynch-D will work with you to identify what solution is best for your business with the constraints you face. Much will be dictated by ISO, internal company policy, or other regulatory requirements. We help you meet these requirements.

Most organisations will expect tape backups with a common backup software is sufficient, however there is a lot more to consider:

  • The type of storage media to use whether tape only, disk to disk to tape or disk to disk with deduplication, etc.
  • Offsite storage
  • Speed of backup and restore.
  • Data and system state backup.
  • Back up and restore methodology.
  • Back up windows
  • etc...

Isynch-D have access to and experience of many different back up solutions from hardware storage to software.  Some examples of products we have worked with include:

  • Symantec Backup Exec and Symantec Net backup
  • Ultrabac
  • CommVault
  • Genie
  • Backup Assist
  • HP Tape Drives
  • Cisco Storage
  • Data Domain deduplication

The reality is some products are better at backing up some systems than others. A simple Windows environment backup with a few servers suite Backup Assist, but in a multi site enterprise environment may require CommVault, or if yo are looking to back up a VMware environment you may select Ultrabac.

It is clear that back up, though understood as being important, needs a lot of thought and preparation so you can select the product suite that offered the features, performance and expandability at the lowest total cost of ownership.
